| AAFP Physician Accreditation | This activity was reviewed and accepted for up 10 Prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to the AMA PRA equivalent to the AMA PRA category 1 credit toward the AMA Physicians Recognition Award. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. |

This course is designed by physicians for primary care and internal medicine physicians, nurses and all other healthcare professionals interested in expansion of their knowledge and skills in Medical Issues in Adolescents and Young Adults. *Adolescent Clinical Problems: Pearls for the Practitioner - a) Understand pitfalls in making a diagnosis in an ill Adolescent b) Appreciate semantic problems that can arise in history taking. c)Review common adolescent health problems and some complications. *Menstrual Disorders - a) Know how to work up a teen with too many or too few periods. b)Understand the usual pathology related to menstrual disorders *Sports Medicine I - a) Lower extremity Be able to examine each joint in the lower extremity to evaluate injury. b)Understand the basics of sport rehabilitation. c)Be able to guide parents regarding weight lifting in teens *Sports Medicine II - Back and Upper extremity : a)Be able to work up the common causes of back pain in teens b)Be able to diagnose serious sports injuries of the upper extremity especially young pitchers *Adolescent Dermatology - a)Be able to recognize common foot rashes and know their treatment. b)Be able to diagnose dysplastic nevus syndrome and plan their management c)Be able to recognize various nevi seen in adolescents *Adolescent Drug use and Motivational Interviewing - a)Understand the peculiar sensitivity of adolescents to drugs of abuse. b)Know how to approach history taking regarding adolescent drug abuse c)Understand the mechanics of Motivational interviewing *Contraception - a)Review the practitioner’s unique approach to adolescent s seeking contraception. b)Know the various types of contraception and how to use them *STI- Sexually Transmissible Infections - a)Know the risks teens face from sexually transmitted infections b) Know who to test for STIs c) Know the presentation of Sexually Transmitted infections and how to diagnose them *Case Studies - a) Using an interactive format practice skills and diagnosis of adolescent health problems. b) Understand the current treatment of Acne *Drugs of Abuse, Psychosis and Suicide - a) Review the physiological effects of drugs of abuse b)Be able to differentiate the difference between the effects of drug abuse, psychosis and organic brain syndromes c) Know the risk factors for suicide. |
