| AAFP Physician Accreditation | This activity was reviewed and accepted for up 10 prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to the AMA PRA equivalent to the AMA PRA category 1 credit toward the AMA Physicians Recognition Award. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. |

Following this course, the participant should be able to identify the causes and recognize the clinical presentations of the commonly seen disorders presented; indicate diagnostic tests available and the suggested use for making a diagnosis; implement available treatment options and appropriate long-term care when indicated. This activity is expected to result in increased confidence in making an appropriate diagnosis and providing effective treatment and referral or follow-up care with the overall goal of improving patient outcomes. *Interesting Cases from the Emergency Department - At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 1. Organize a straightforward approach to the acutely ill child with a confusing presentation. 2. Generate a differential diagnosis for the acutely ill or injured child. *Pediatric Dermatology - common rashes you should know - At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 1. Identify specific characteristics of rashes encountered in the acute care setting. 2. Initiate appropriate treatment for common dermatologic conditions. 3. Distinguish similar appearing rashes in children *Pediatric Fever and Rash - At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 1. Discuss the initial approach to a febrile child with petechiae. 2. Identify distinguishing characteristics of rashes in the child with fever. 3. Enumerate historical clues that are helpful in evaluating difficult to identify rashes. *Fever in the Young Child - occult bacteremia and UTI - At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 1. Stratify the young child with high fevers into risk categories of occult infections. 2. Appraise the current literature regarding occult bacteremia and UTI. 3. Apply data from vaccine studies to clinical practice. *Physical Abuse and Conditions mimicking physical abuse - At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 1. Identify findings that are characteristic of physical abuse. 2. Distinguish physical findings often confused with physical abuse. 3. Formulate further evaluation and an appropriate course of action when the suspicion of abuse exists. *Minor Surgical Procedures for the office or ED - At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 1. Identify pitfalls in successfully performing minor procedures. 2. Develop models or methods to teach and practice common procedures.
*Pediatric Status Epilepticus and Febrile Seizures - 1. Explain the management of status epilepticus in the pediatric patient. 2. Define appropriate laboratory and imaging studies in the acute care setting. 3. List the typical features of a simple and complex febrile seizure. *Pediatric Extremity injuries - At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 1. Discuss the unique responses of the pediatric musculoskeletal system to forces. 2. Initiate management for common pediatric extremity injuries. 3. Correlate mechanism of injury, age and anatomy with common and uncommon extremity injuries *Visual Diagnosis - At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 1. Recognize common, uncommon and atypical presentations of childhood illnesses. 2. Formulate an initial approach to management of certain childhood illnesses or injuries based on visual clues. 3. Ask appropriate questions to discriminate among similar appearing pediatric diagnoses. *Pediatric Clinical Controversies - At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 1. Combine recent literature-based data and practical considerations to determine an approach to controversial cases 2. Recognize strengths and limitations of often quoted studies in the management of pediatric acute care cases. |
