AAFP Physician Accreditation Physician Accreditation - This activity is reviewed for 12 Prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Conference Tuition Cancellations

Must be confirmed in writing and 10% of paid tuition processing fee will be assessed. No refunds will be made if cancellation is made after October 25, 2010 however 50% of tuition fee may be applied to a future MCE conferences.
Program Objectives

According to American Pain Society estimates, 50 million people are partially or totally disabled by pain and 45% of all Americans seek care for persistent pain at some point in their lives. Pain is one of the most common reasons patients seek medical attention and a symptom encountered by every physician. it addresses principles of pain physiology, pain assessment, pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management options, pain in special populations (e.g., older adults, children), persistent nonmalignant pain, and cancer pain.

*Pathophysiology of Chronic Pain - OBJECTIVES:1)Recognize the neurobiologic changes of the disease of chronic pain. 2)Understand chronic pain in the context of the bio-psychological model. 3)Apply principles of chronic pain to patient interaction.

*History of Pain Management: from Specificity to Pain as Brain Disease - OBJECTIVES: 1) Early understanding of pain focused on a dualistic model separating the brain from the human body. 2) A biopsychosocial understanding of pain incorporates biologic, psychologic, and social aspects of pain and suffering into an interactive model. 3) The Gate Control Theory of pain helped to support the role of the spinal cord dorsal horn and higher brain centers as active modulators of the pain experience. .

*Multi- & Interdisciplinary Approach to Chronic Pain - OBJECTIVES: 1) Understand pain in a broader context than just pain perception. 2) Recognize possible sequeli of pain. 3) How to intervene in patients with psychosocial issues related to pain.

*Rational Polypharmacy of Pain - OBJECTIVES: 1) Apply new pathophysiologic understanding to treating pain. 2) Understand the different cases of non opiod analgesic and how to use them in pain treatment. 3) Recognize adjunctive agents and when to use these agents using a case based approach.

Rational Polypharmacology of Pain - Opiods Part 1 and Part 2 - OBJECTIVES: 1) Understand the pharmacology of opiod analgesia. 2) Recognize the risks and benefits of using opiod analgesia. 3)Apply principles learnt to patient care using a case based approach.

*Multidisciplinary Approaches to Chronic Pain States - OBJECTIVES:1) Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary treatment programs incorporate a number of health care providers including physicians and therapist working and communicating together as a means of more effectively treating chronic pain. 2) Psychologic factors, including coping, maladaptive cognitions, fear and anxiety are important predictors of chronicity in chronic pain. 3) Multidisciplinary treatment programs have been found to provide improvement in psychosocial functioning and decreased pain.

*Rational Polypharmacy for Treatment of Co-Morbid Psychiatric - OBJECTIVES: 1) Understand the variety of pharmacological options available to treat psychosocial complaints. 2) Understand how to use multiple drugs in treating patients in pain. 3) Recognize when to treat patients with co-morbid disorders using a case based approach. 4) Recognize patients with ill defined pain conditions.

*Risk Management and Documentation: The Critical Step in Dealing with Chronic Pain Patients - OBJECTIVES: 1) Understand the risk involved in treating or not treating pain 2) Apply risk management skills to everyday practice 3) Recognize and protect your practice in patients at higher risk for problem behavior.

*Assessment and Treatment of Acute and Chronic Low Back Pain - OBJECTIVES: 1) A number of structures in the lumbar spine may serve as pain generators including, disc, facet joint, myofascial, and ligamentous structures. 2) Physical exam of patients with low back pain must focus on proximal and distal strength deficits and muscle imbalances-Interventional procedures that may be of benefit for acute and chronic low back pain include epidural and facet injections, spinal cord stimulation, and trigger point injections.

Lodging Deposit - Two nights deposit must accompany your reservation. The balance of lodging payment, as well as any incidental charges, is due to the hotel upon check-out. The hotel accepts all major credit cards.

Lodging Cancellation - Per our lodging agreement these are the cancellations terms and conditions:

Cancellation 60 days or more before arrival - you will receive full deposit

Cancellation 59-31 days before arrival - a one night deposit is forfeited

Cancellation 30 days or less before arrival no lodging refunds can be made. No-shows and early departures are considered a cancellation.
