Blessed with a setting few places can lay claim to a coastline that has the most powerful waves in the world, idyllic bays for swimming and snorkeling, and miles of pristine beaches lined with swaying palms. Paddling out at sunrise for a dawn patrol surf session, snapping a photo of a honu, the green sea turtles, while snorkeling, launching off “Jump Rock” at Waimea Bay, or discovering deserted white sand beaches trekking up to Ka’ena Point, this area never ceases to amaze.

Winter time is the best timeframe to witness these amazing humans doing amazing feats. Handling these waves is a great accomplishment in the surfing community and once you see the action in person, you’ll realize why. A visit to the Hawaiian Islands is not complete without experiencing a luau – a Hawaiian feast featuring lively music and vibrant cultural performances from Hawaii and greater Polynesia. Dole Plantation, the oldest plantation on the island, is now funneling visitors on tours. Dole also offers some yummy treats, like their famous Pineapple Ice Cream. Follow up by burning off those calories in what was what was once the largest maze in the world.

Hawaii’s beautiful beaches are only the beginning. From surfing the gentle waves of Waikiki Beach to snorkeling with manta rays on the Kona Coast, there’s never a dull moment in the Hawaiian Islands. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or searching for activities the whole family can enjoy. Why else visit the North beaches if you can’t get in?! The famous Sharks Cove is a great spot for families and amateur swimmers. You can rent or bring your own snorkel and fins or even purchase if you don’t have any gear. Although this beach isn’t ALWAYS safe (always consider the wave conditions), this cove offers the most protection compared to other beaches. Oahu also now offers its first North Shore Zip-lining! This is incredibly fun and is a great family adventure, enjoy the scenery from a different perspective.
Food & Culture
Make sure to cool off with a Hawaiian Shave Ice. Shave Ice is a local treat like a snow cone, except the ice is much more finely shaved. Make sure to take a walk around Haleiwa, it’s a great town to grab a cup of morning coffee, brunch, or dinner. The diverse culture of Hawaii is expressed in (among other things) language, music, art, theater, dance, film, cuisine and a multitude of festivals.
